We Won !

Wednesday night, October 4, 2023, the WMEX Good Guys took to the stage in Concord, to accept the New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters award for “Best LPFM Radio Station in the Granite State for 2023.”

WMEX-LP 105.9 FM was assigned the call sign WMVI-LP by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on May 20, 2014, but eight days later changed its call sign to WMEX-LP and began broadcasting “The Most Amazing Oldies”, providing local radio service to the city of Rochester, New Hampshire for the past nine years.

The Station’s History

WMEX-LP 105.9 FM plays the best classic rock and roll hits from the 1950s through the 1980s. WMEX-AM was the authority for the hit songs we all loved, back when New Englanders wore bobby sox and poodle skirts, . Today, WMEX-LP broadcasts in FM stereo and sounds even better.  The voice of the station’s most popular air personality, and one of the most popular in New England, Arnie “Woo Woo” Ginsburg, can still be heard on 105.9 FM WMEX-LP.

WMEX-LP is a huge supporter of the Rochester Rotary, as well as everything happening in the Lilac City.

The station is financially supported by underwriting from local businesses and donations from its listeners.

  1. Congratulations to WMEX-LP on winning this award. More radio stations like this are needed everywhere, whether it be in Rochester, New York, New Hampshire, or Minnesota, or even in Albany, Georgia, Minnesota, or New York, for that matter. Stations like WMEX-LP, that really and truly serve the community they call home are few and far between indeed. Congratulations again.

  3. I went to the website.. doesn’t look like they stream. That’s a shame, I think Alexa and other smart devices are replacing the traditional radio in many households.

  4. There is something called the “six degrees of LPFM” for which I have always appreciated. Yes, there are a lot of dynamics going on there. Some look at the religious ones and the politically activist ones and scratch their heads. But, if they are successful, well…they obviously knew their market. And then, you can just have a 100 watter in a tiny community, like the one I’m involved with and simply do good local radio however you can, and you know you have listeners because you hear from them all the time.

    • My comment “kfodor” about “a local one that only rebroadcasts a national Catholic network. ” is nothing negative about Catholic or other religious radio. My father was an ordained minister so I grew up around religion. I listen sometimes to it..though always raised Baptist. But rather my concern is the fact there is nothing local. Local radio is what I believe the FCC had in mind with the LPFM program.

      • While LPFM and Translators are both low power FM signals, their designated reason for existing is very different.

What you described earlier had me thinking your were listening to a translator signal and not a LPFM radio service.

      • While there are LP’s which are religious and that may be the case with the one you are hearing, as Dick noted translators are low power, but actually higher power than LPFM’s (150 watts more, in fact). I didn’t think you were saying negative things about religious stations, (though many folks do complain about the huge number of religious stations in general these days). Those folks fail to understand there’s no line of people out there with millions of dollars in cash in their hands to buy a commercial radio station. Numerous church organizations can get that money and so they buy them. I know the current LPFM window has been designed to prohibit religious organizations from something that happened last go around…which were a few unscrupulous applicants filing for hundreds (or thousands) of licenses. That took the FCC a long time to figure out. I agree with you totally that some of these stations add nothing to their local community other than preaching and prayers and that’s sad. You’d think they could at least find someone to do a weather forecast a few times a day and some community announcements.
